Hotel de la Poste - Saint-Gervais-d'Auvergne

We stayed for 1 night on our drive home to UK. Like many small, French hotels, the rooms were comfortable but not luxurious. But the rates are not on the luxury scale either. As the hotel is a logis, emphasis is placed on good value, local cooking. There was plenty of choice and the food was both abundant and tasty. Not haute cuisine, more traditional and satisfying. The cheese board was wonderful. We were given slabs of 4 superb local cheeses and told to help ourselves to as much as we wanted. We did! We completed our evening with a glass of Armagnac sitting outside, breathing fresh, country air. Bliss. We hope to return to do some walking in the delightful countryside and will have demi-pension, knowing that we will not be going hungry.

It had been getting into the high on the plains of Limousin, so we decided to head for the Massif Central, and enjoy some higher ground and cooler temperatures. La Poste was a welcome respite from the heat at lunchtime. Plenty of locals in...the bar, having a drink before heading home for lunch; and a good mix of diners on the outside terrace, which is overlooked by the lovely Romanesque church. Madame was keeping a keen eye on service. Here is classic Auvergnat cooking (Chicken in red wine, excellent charcuterie, plenty of cheese from the region in dishes such as Truffade, and a wonderful Pain Perdu for desert made from their own brioche), Alongside home-baked bread, the wine list is distinctive and reflects the region well. La Poste is obviously a social hub in this evocative village. Not far is Puy de Sancy, the highest piq in the region. They do rooms. If the servcie at lunchtime is anything to go by, i would be confident in coming here to stay in the future.

The hotel room was nothing to write home about. Somewhat small, but comfortable and clean. However the restaurant downstairs was superb. We started with the foie gras, and moved on to the frog legs. Both of which were excellent. A small lounge, but nice.

Il était arrivé dans les plaines du Limousin dans les années 30, nous avons donc décidé de nous diriger vers le Massif Central et de profiter d'un terrain plus élevé et de températures plus fraîches. La Poste a été une réponse bienvenue depuis la chaleur jusqu'à midi. De nombreux locaux au bar, autour d'un verre avant de rentrer chez eux pour le déjeuner ; et un bon mélange de convives sur la terrasse extérieure surplombée par la belle église romane. Madame avait un regard aigu sur le service. Voici la cuisine auvergnat classique (poulet au vin rouge, excellente charcuterie, beaucoup de fromages de la région dans des plats comme la Truffade et un merveilleux Pain Perdu pour le dessert de sa propre brioche). Outre le pain fait maison, la carte des vins est distinctive et reflète bien la région. La Poste est évidemment un centre social dans ce village évocateur. Non loin se trouve le Puy de Sancy, le Piq le plus haut de la région. Ils font des chambres. Si la réservation à midi est tout ce qu'il faut, je serais confiant de venir ici pour rester à l'avenir.

La chambre d’hôtel n’avait rien à écrire à la maison. Petit mais confortable et propre. Mais le restaurant du rez-de-chaussée était super. Nous avons commencé par le foie gras et sommes passés aux cuisses de grenouilles. Les deux étaient excellents. Un petit salon, mais sympa.

We hope that we will return to do some walking in the charming landscape and will have Demi-Pension, know that we will not be hungry.
