I was visiting Gigondas on business in early December and being out of season, very few of the local restaurants were open for lunch however we were well advised to try Nez run by the very accommodating Fred. The restaurant is a short walk up the hill from the centre of the village and the local carpark is essential as parking in the village is near impossible. The restaurant is tiny consisting of a bar and a few tables however when the weather is more clement, most people would eat outside in the adjacent square. Initially, we were the only customers however a few others arrived whilst we were eating. As a wine bar in the historic wine village of Gigondas, they have a huge range of wines, many by the glass making it easy to try different wines although needless to say, these were predominantly all from the southern Rhone. To accompany the interesting mixed starter, having never tried it previously, I opted for a Provence Rose, the much talked about ‘Brangelina’ Chateau Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose, very ordinary, so disappointing given all the hype it has received. A glass of Gigondas went exceptionally well with the very slow cooked beef that had reached the melt in the mouth consistency. A quick cup of coffee and we were on our way.Fred and his staff were friendly and efficient, the food tasty, a perfect spot for a quick lunch.
