This was our second and long overdue visit to Le Quatre Epices. Situated in a modern(ish) building in a park close to the centre of Craon there is no problem with parking. On a fine day one has the choice of eating inside or on the terrace under one of the large parasols; on this occasion we chose the outside option. There is a choice of three set menus, but as it was lunchtime there was a also the possibility of having a three course ‘menu du jour’ at 14.50 euros. One of our party of four went that route but three of us chose the cheapest 27 euro menu which offered the promise of some interesting and imaginative dishes. While we enjoyed our aperitifs and made our selections, we were served an ‘amuse bouche’ of duck foie gras.Madame chose a salad of quinoa with crevettes, grapefruit and a balsamic vinaigrette as her first course which met with considerable approval. Two of us elected to have a tasty combination of crabmeat, avocado mousse and a concasse of tomato with black sesame. A main course of nicely cooked cod was well received but I felt I had made an even better choice with my dish of pieces of monkfish in a delicious sauce americaine, served with wild rice.Desserts were equally good, light but full of flavour. The wine list was not extensive but had something for most tastes; our bottle of Cremant de la Loire at 22 euros worked well with our chosen dishes.Coffee with mignardises rounded off a most enjoyable meal. My only slight quibble was that the service could have been a little better, given that the restaurant was not that busy, however, we will not leave it so long before making a return visit.

Having read the reviews I was not disappointed, the menu provided was tasty and well prepared, the staff were polite and helpful and it was worth going a little out of the way to try this restaurant out. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a great spot for a quiet lunch. Well done to the chef and staff

Very good quality and a simple day menu. Nothing to complain about. Personal suggestion? Risotto with fish

Date night.... me and the wife visited as we were staying in a hotel near. The staff were very helpful as we don't speak any French and helped explain a couple of the set menus. We ended up with a 5 course meal which was very good and a perfectly slow paced service which is what we wanted. Enjoyable night and nice place.

We were intrigued to see this seemingly out of place gourmet restaurant on the edge of a campsite in the middle (with respect) of of nowhere. But this was a really nice, serene idyll of calm set in a beautiful lakeside park in the Mayenne, Loire, in a little town called Craon. We read the reviews and decided we'll give it a go when we get there. A few days into the holiday our curiosity rewarded us, we took up their offer of a 'take home' meal, which was actually quite delicious, and we returned with gusto to eat lunch there each remaining day of our holiday. The atmosphere was calm, stately and measured, we and all the diners were in a state of pleasure and respect, savouring every mouthful. Slowly. There was a healthy clientele every day, some businessmen, some holidaymakers and just a few passers by; we chose to sit outside but noticed the faithful were in numbers inside too.The staff were marvellously attentive, not too bustling but just enough to be 'on hand', and the food was just, well, perfect. There is a menu on their website, but naturally 'specials' and their chosen 'plats du jour' are changed regularly. I really would be very happy to return soon, sadly it's a long way from home. But if you're anywhere near Craon, seek it out. It's a gem. And I wish the proprietors all the best, and thanks.
