La Renaissance - Caylus

Great service by a group of young people, but were sadly let down by the chef totally average food for above average price.

We know a previous incarnation of the restaurant at Varen (Le Moulin) and were interested to see how it had managed the move to a location in a town in a hotel. We needn't have worried. Very pleasant meal in a room with good atmosphere, attentive waiter and nice local wine.

The entrance to the hotel does not do justice to the food you will be served so reserve judgement. We were taken through to a lovely dining room off the reception. There is a bar area but that was on the other side and we only saw that when leaving. People were eating in it which may explain why the restaurant where we were was quite quiet. the menu had a 22 euro and a 32 euro (the latter I can't be sure about as we both went for the 22 euro one. I had the soup followed by an amuse Bouche then cured salmon as the next course followed by the pollack. All were delicious and very well-presented. I'm hopeless at remembering the French for various fish but the waiter kindly looked it up for me. My dessert was just out of this world!! A chocolate gateau with mousse, praline and lovely biscuity crunch. I told the waiter how much I had enjoyed it and he came back shortly after with a list of the ingredients so that I can make it at home in London. My husband enjoyed his food very much and had a lovely bottle of local wine at very reasonable price. A great night and a great place for good food.

Delightful waiter who goes all out to accommodate a fussy vegetarian and even gets the dictionary out to make sure what he's offering is understood. Lovely food by a cosy fire in deepest winter.

Good food but not worth what you pay for it. Set lunch in the adjoining cafe, food from the same kitchen and a fraction of the cost

The looks and feel is very much an old style French restaurant. We had dinner on the back terrace. Our group of 4 had both the Euro 22 and 32 menu. The food was exquisitely delicious and authentic traditional French: Foie Gras, Souris d'agneau etc... Head waiter is indeed a bit idiosyncratic per the other review, but very friendly and it kind of adds to the charm of the place.

Best deal for lunch is the fixed price menu either on the sidewalk in summer or in the back room. Evenings, the main dining room provides good food, pricey, service erratic.

This restaurant is a disgrace. They advertised a Menu Du Jour, starting with a "potage" which the waitress refused to serve. Later I could see other tables on the street with soup and even wine on the table. When dessert came I could see those tables with the soup had a choice. She told me there was no choice so I decided to challenge her. Those are "reguliers" she said, implying that I was not. I have lived in the Caylus commune for 24 years, and used to use this restaurant often, even as a Rotarian, when I was visiting. This sort of "racism" is not becoming of any establishment, these special terms should have been pointed out before I sat down. I will never go back to any Restaurant with this type of attitude.
