Apt is not a very prepossessing place--it's downright ugly, in fact--but you might find yourself there while visiting the well-known and picturesque villages in the Luberon, or staying in a nearby bed-and-breakfast. If so, seek out La Galtiere, known to Apt locals for a warm welcome and very good food, yielding an excellent rapport qualite/prix. Jacky the check likes to drink, to talk, and above all the cook--get him going and he'll tell you all about himself and his establishment. Without or without him, enjoy his food: we enjoyed his guinea-hen with wild mushrooms, his stuffed mussels, his pheasant with cabbage. The cooking is delightfully traditional--no surprises apart from high quality combined with good value. The wine list is entirely local and very reliable (Coteaux d'Aix, Cotes du Ventoux, Cotes du Luberon).
