My husband and I happened upon Le Royal Bar Tabac late one winter afternoon, while driving in the Pyrenees. It looked very ordinary from outside, and we would not have stopped had anything else been open, but we are SO glad we did! It was standing room only inside, and we had to wait for a table...this, undoubtedly due to the enormous, beautiful, delicious and very reasonably priced dinners being served. Our plate contained a choice of lamb or beef (perfectly prepared), several fine cheeses, a variety of vegetables and salads, and tasty garnishes. Wine was good and inexpensive. There was a festive atmosphere, with lots of "table talk" and the service was fast and courteous. This was two years ago, but we have never forgotten it. Le Royal remains a favorite dining memory. I'm sorry my good intentions to recommend ithave taken so long to fulfill.
